    Worth knowing

    Budgets that survive the month.

    1. 01

Budget from a normal month, not a good one

Plan on the revenue of an ordinary month. A budget built on your best month quietly assumes it will repeat, and the gap shows up as debt.

    2. 02

Separate fixed and repeating costs first

Rent, software and salaries arrive every month whatever you sell. Get them down first: they decide your break-even point, and they are the costs that creep up unnoticed.

    3. 03

Set tax aside the day you are paid

Move the set-aside into a separate account as money arrives. Tax bills are only a crisis for businesses that spent the money first and worked out the bill later.

    Questions

    About this tool.

Start from what you expect to earn in a typical month, list every cost by category, and check the difference is a profit you can live on after tax. Then compare what you actually spend each month against the plan, and adjust the plan, not just your behaviour, when a category is always wrong.
It depends on where you are and how your business is set up, but 25 to 30 percent of profit is a common starting point for sole traders and small companies. Ask an accountant for your real figure; the calculator applies whatever rate you enter to profit, not revenue.
The revenue you need each month to cover all of your costs. Below it you are losing money; above it every sale is profit before tax. In this calculator it is simply your total monthly costs.
It varies widely by industry: service businesses often run 15 to 30 percent or more, retail and food far less. What matters more is that the margin covers tax, a buffer for slow months and some growth. The profit margin calculator works it out per product.
