How to get this right.

Start from something square and simple
A favicon is read at 16 pixels. Whatever survives at that size is the design — usually one letter, one mark, or one solid shape. A detailed logo scaled down becomes an unreadable smudge, so most brands draw a separate simplified mark for it.

The sizes that actually get requested
16 and 32 for browser tabs and bookmarks, 180 for the iOS home screen, 192 and 512 for Android and PWA manifests. The others are there for the odd desktop context that still asks. Serving all of them costs a few kilobytes and removes a whole category of "why is it blurry" bugs.

Put them at the root and reference them explicitly
Browsers will guess at /favicon.ico if you say nothing, but the guess does not cover Apple or Android. The generated markup names each file, which is the only reliable way to control what shows up.

Questions

About this tool.

Do I need an .ico file?

Not in 2026. Every browser still in use reads PNG favicons. An .ico is only worth producing if you have to support Internet Explorer, which almost nobody does any more.

What size should my source image be?

512×512 or larger, and square. Anything smaller gets upscaled for the big sizes and looks soft — the tool warns you when that is about to happen.

Why do the files download one at a time?

Building a zip in the browser would mean shipping a compression library to every visitor. Downloading eight small PNGs in sequence is faster and keeps the page tiny.

My favicon did not update — why?

Browsers cache favicons unusually hard. Do a hard reload, and if that fails, open the icon URL directly once to force a fetch.
