Worth knowing

Plans that change your mind.

  1. 01

Write it in an afternoon, not a month

The point of a one-page plan is speed. Fill every box with your best guess, mark the ones you are least sure of, and go and test those first.

  2. 02

    Be specific about the customer

"Small businesses" is not a segment. "Mobile dog groomers who are fully booked and lose money on no-shows" is. The narrower the early adopters, the easier they are to find and the clearer the message.

  3. 03

    Update it as you learn

A canvas is a record of what you currently believe. Print a new one each time a conversation with customers changes your mind, and keep the old ones: the differences show what you have learned.

Questions

About this tool.

A one-page business plan created by Ash Maurya, adapted from the Business Model Canvas for new businesses. It fits the whole plan — problem, customers, solution, channels, costs and revenue — on one sheet, so you can test and change it quickly.
The Business Model Canvas describes how an established business works, with boxes for partners, activities and resources. The Lean Canvas swaps those for problem, solution, key metrics and unfair advantage, because a new business is mostly uncertain about whether the problem is real and the solution works.
Customer segments and problem, together: who has the problem, and what exactly it is. Then the unique value proposition, the solution and the channels. Leave unfair advantage until last — it is fine to leave it empty early on.
For deciding what to build and testing it, yes, and most founders find it far more useful than a long document. Banks and some investors still ask for a full plan with financial forecasts; the canvas is the best place to start that too.
No. It lives only in this tab and nothing is uploaded, so save the PDF or copy the text before you close the page. Inside an AWGCOR account the canvas is saved and shown to the AI assistant as context.
