01
Number every invoice, and never reuse one
A sequential number (INV-0001, INV-0002) is what makes an invoice traceable for you and for your accountant. Most tax authorities require invoices to be uniquely numbered in an unbroken sequence. Skipping or reusing a number is the single most common thing that turns a simple bookkeeping question into a long one.

02
Put the due date on it, not just the issue date
An invoice that says "payment within 30 days" is vaguer than one that says "due 14 March". Research on late payment consistently finds that a specific calendar date gets paid sooner than a relative term, because it removes the argument about when the clock started.

03
Describe the work the way the client understood it
Write line items in the language of the thing they agreed to buy, not your internal shorthand. "Homepage redesign — 3 rounds of revisions" gets approved; "Design sprint 4b" gets forwarded to someone who does not recognise it and then sits there.
